Great Rides Around Austin and through the Central
Texas Hill County include Some Dangerous Highways HWY 71 & RR 620, RR
12, and RR 36
(Be Careful and Give Larger Vehicle Drivers Space)
One of the more scenic
motorcycle rides around Austin, Lake Travis, and the Central
Texas Hill Country is taking HWY 2222 out to RR 620.
Once you get to HWY 2222 you are close to Lake Travis and
several great Austin institutions including the Violente
Beach (Water Park), the Oasis, and the famous Hippie Hollow.
Take a left on RR620 and you can ride by Carlos and
Charlie's (follow the signs off of RR620) as well as ride
over the Mansfield Dam.
RR620 ends at Highway 71
which is a scenic Texas highway, but one of the most dangerous highways in Central
Texas. Be careful on this highway, because it has had
numerous fatal accidents over the last several years.
This highway has been under construction and has quite a bit
of lake traffic going back and forth from Austin to Lake LBJ
making it a dangerous place to ride.
It can be part of a great riding loop through the Texas Hill
Country and by Lake Travis, but it is a potentially dangerous
ride.
At HWY 2222 and RR 620,
you can extend this ride and take Bullock
Hollow Road that winds on to 2769 and allows you to ride around Lake
Travis. You can then continue on 2769 until
you get to FM Road 1431 to Marble Falls and come back around to
Austin on
Highway 71. Great scenic ride, but FM Road 1431 is
narrow, hilly, and can be dangerous.
Another great ride is to
take HWY 2244 out to HWY 71, head west to Hamilton Pool
Road, then take a left on Ranch Road 12 and head south down through Dripping
Springs and then Wimberly. A few miles after Wimberly
RR12 hits RR36, turn right and head
west over the scenic Devil's Backbone. A great view of
the Texas Hill Country, but again can be dangerous if you
get around intoxicated or careless drivers.
All are excellent rides
through the Texas Hill Country, but be safe and aware that
there are some dangerous areas, especially on HWY 71 and on
certain parts of FM Road 1431, RR 36, and RR 12.

night's traffic accident on Highway 71 in Southwest Travis
County has not yet been released. Investigators say the man
was driving on the wrong side of the road when the fatal
crash occurred."
"On average we see at least one wreck a
month at this intersection because there are no protected
turn lanes and no protected turn lights," Amor said.
"The traffic situation has gotten so bad
that Amor says many of his customers traveling Westbound on
71 won’t even try to cross the highway. Instead they pass it
up, go down to the traffic light at Old Bee Caves and Thomas
Springs Road, then cut through the Valero and onto the
eastbound side of the highway so they can enter Oak Hill
Automotive more safely."
