Chrysler, Ford recalling SUVs, vans

Chrysler, Ford recalling SUVs, vans WASHINGTON – According to government officials, Chrysler is recalling about 22,000 sport utility vehicles and trucks to fix brake tubes that could lead to the loss of brake fluid.

Ford Motor Co. is also recalling more than 30,000 2010 Transit Connect vans to replace pushpins holding the liners above the driver's head. Company officials said government testing found it failed to meet federal standards protecting the head.

Officials with Chrysler said the company’s recall affects certain 2010 Dodge Nitro, Dodge Ram, Jeep Liberty and Jeep Wranglers that could have defective brake tubes. The problem could lead to the loss of brake fluid, making it difficult to brake and posing the threat of a crash.

Defect May Have Led To Fatal Crash In Whitman

A 29 year old woman was injured when the minivan she was in crashed into a building in Whitman. A 28 year old man was killed when the minivan he was driving crashed into a building in Whitman.

Could a defect in a Ford Windstar have led to a fatal crash in Whitman that killed a 28-year-old driver and left his passenger in critical condition?

That's one question investigators will be looking at as they try to determine how the minivan crashed into a building on Temple Street in Whitman.

Investigators say the driver, Sean Bowman of Hanson, lost control of the vehicle.

Relatives say Bowman had called his mother the night before saying he had to get the minivan into a shop because he heard a "funny noise".

The Windstar minivan is now being recalled by Ford, but safety consultant Sean Kane of Safety Research & Strategies says it has a safety defect that goes back several years and Ford should have acted sooner.

He says the recall began when a federal investigation was launched back in May.

"This is something where Ford should have initiated a campaign well before the government got involved and did an investigation. This is not something new to Ford," said Kane

He says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has logged numerous complaints about problems with a cracked rear axle, and a look at Sean Bowman's mangled car shows the rear axle is also cracked.

Whether it contributed to the crash, or was cracked after the fact is not yet clear.

A recall letter that Ford started mailing to Windstar owners in late September states, "A completely fractured rear axle may lead to a loss of vehicle control. There may be little or no warning to the operator before a cracked rear axle completely fractures."

The vehicles being recalled were manufactured between 1998 and 2003, and crashed Ford Windstar falls right in the middle in 2001. 575,000 vehicles are affected by the recall.

A Ford spokesman tells WBZ-TV the company is aware of only seven accidents involving injury. But so far no one, not even police, can explain how Bowman lost control.

His 29 year old passenger is in critical condition. Both were students at Massasoit Community College, and were on their way to class.

Volkswagen tops new roof crash test; Kia worst Print

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has created a new method for rating roof strength in cars so consumers can make informed decisions about which cars will protect them best in a rollover crash. In their first series of tests, the agency looked at 12 small SUVs. The institute's testing shows that the stronger the roof, the better occupants fare in a crash. To earn the agency's good rating, roofs had to be at least twice as strong as the minimum federal standard. Just four earned the agency's highest rating of good. Of the 2008-2009 models they looked at, the Volkswagen Tiguan fared the best and the Kia Sportage was rated the weakest. The Tiguan, the Subaru Forester, the Honda Element, and the Jeep Patriot were all rated good. The roofs on the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape were rated marginal and the Kia Sportage was rated poor. Approximately 10,000 people a year are killed in rollover crashes, according to the institute.

Sunday morning accident results in 1 fatality

An early morning crash Sunday in Austin has left one man dead.

The truck then flipped over, coming to a rest between the main lanes and the frontage road. Investigators said they're still trying to determine why the truck left the roadway.

"Vehicular homicide detectives are on scene, looking at the skid marks, and trying to make a determination as to why the vehicle left the road," Sgt. Richard Stresing said.

Investigators said the driver was taken to Brackenridge Hospital, but died a short time later. The name of the victim has yet to be released.

TV anchor's family suing Ford over fatal crash

In 2005, a fatal single-vehicle rollover Ford Explorer crash killed a Las Vegas anchor in a deadly accident near Death Valley.  At the time of the accident the anchor's two children were also in the 2000 Ford Explorer that rolled over.  Fortunately, both young children survived the crash.

The Ford Explorer Rollover crash is at the center of a civil lawsuit. Where the family of the person killed in the Ford Rollover Crash is sued Ford Motor Co claiming that the Ford Explorer driven in the deadly accident was unsafe and contributed to her death including allegations that the Ford Explorer's roof wasn't strong enough to withstand a rollover accident and that the seat belts were defective.

"This isn't the first lawsuit against Ford alleging that the Explorer's roof is unsafe. A jury in Texas awarded the families of two people killed in a rollover crash, Paul Alaniz and Laura Benavides, $225 million during a 2002 trial, according to a series by the Detroit News on automobile roof safety."

"In the trial, the families claimed the roof of a 2000-model Ford F-Series Supercab tore open during a crash. Both the victims were ejected."
